Planning a Bathroom Refresh
We recently experienced one of the scariest things that a homeowner can: a random puddle of water.
C discovered a random puddle of water under the sink in the hall bathroom, and it sent us into an absolute tizzy. Twenty minutes and a full sink inspection later, turns out there isn’t a leak, but we are well acquainted with every inch of the space. There really wasn’t a leak, but it really highlighted that it’s time to give the space a much-needed refresh.
Our house got a real landlord makeover before it went up for sale, with the former owners removing every ounce of personality, and not in a well done way. Almost every inch of space was covered in a variety of white to off-white colors. The bathroom is one of the more tragic spaces of them all. The whole house already struggles with dark interiors, but being smack dab in the middle of the house with no windows, having only a weak vanity light to fill the whole room, and every surface a stunning shade of not-quite-white, the hall bathroom feels more like something out of Backrooms than the lovely place to shower that it should be.
It was the final push I needed to finally jump into refreshing the bathroom!

I struggled for so so long to figure out what direction to go in for this bathroom. As soon as we moved in, I set a general color palette for the whole house, and “assigned” colors to the bedrooms to make their design easier. The living room is mostly neutral (another very dark room!), and the en suite bathroom would be the same color as the primary bedroom. But this hall bathroom remained a mystery!
I came across these William Morris curtains at TJ Maxx, and I immediately had the vision! This gorgeous pattern pulled in everything I love, and the rest of the decisions fell right into place.
The navy in the curtain served as the moody piece I had been thinking about putting all over the room (thank god I didn’t!), and the softer colors in the curtain I can incorporate throughout. The bronzey gold carries into the new vanity light and hardware, eventually to the drawer pulls and doorknob too. Towels will be neutral, and as much as I still avoid shopping at Target, I will be buying the Threshold brand towels. I loved the ones I bought a few years ago, they last a long time and wash really well, so now that we’re upgrading to larger towels, we’re going to rebuy. I’ll bring in more of the greens and soft pinks in the art, but I have no idea what that’ll look like, but finding the right art is a looong term process.
It’s taken over a year to find the right style and vibe for the hall bath, and with these new shower curtains, it’s a big step forward towards feeling like I actually live in my home.
